A Solenoid valve is very reliable but sometimes problems can occur with internal leaks or valves not closing properly. Often these problems are simply caused by debris or sediment lodged inside the valve. To inspect your solenoid valve we recommend these steps:

• Remove the solenoid valve from the line once fluid and power have been isolated

• Remove the top circlip and solenoid coil then remove the stainless steel guide tube - inside the tube there is a loose plunger and spring. There may be multiple parts depending on the valve in question

• Check both tube and plunger for solid particles then clean with solvent and compressed air

• For pilot-operated valves, remove the valve upper body screws and check the diaphragm for debris or damage

• Clean all parts inside the valve

• Once satisfied that the parts are not damaged and the inside is clean then reassemble the valve

If sediment is a problem, you may benefit from an in-line filter fitted upstream of the valve. However, if corrosion is present you may not have the correct valve type for your application. In extreme cases, both sediment and corrosion can cause the plunger to stick, drawing more current through the coil causing it to burn out.

A regular programme of maintenance will help to identify any problems in this respect and prolong the life of the solenoid valve.
